I guess I should back up a little. The girls are sick again, so we went to the Dr yesterday. Lauren has had a runny nose since Erica’s b-day (Feb 13) which started to get progressively more yellow/green as the week has gone on, so Wednesday I scheduled her for a Dr. appointment for Thursday afternoon (after picking up the girls from their half day of school but early enough that if she needs antibiotics she will be on them long enough to still get to go to Auntie Lindsey’s baby shower Saturday).
Enter: Samantha gets brought home from school Wednesday by Aunt Kam (why aunt Kam brought her is another whole funny story) with a sore throat, headache, stomach ache and running a low grade temp (100.5)….sounds like strep to me…called office to add an appointment for Sam, can’t get her in at that previously scheduled time, options are 11:10 or 4:20…better go with the 4:20 because the 1/2 day of school dismisses at 11:20 and there’s no bussing (hate to make Sam wait that long but…). Okay, all set. Not until after Erica gets home from school do I realize that NONE OF MY CHILDREN WILL BE GOING TO SCHOOL TOMORROW! Call the office back (at like 4:57) is the 11:10 still open? …yes, so we switch to the earlier appointment.
Samantha is shall we say needy when she is ill (I pity her future husband if they are both sick at the same time b/c she will undoubtedly out “sick” him). She gets very weepy, likes lots of pampering, and becomes amazingly incapacitated. So I gave her some JR Motron for her throat pain and we had a little chat about when she started feeling ill … that morning, anybody else sick? …about 3 or 4 other kids have been out with sore throats, and getting her sufficiently distracted with a movie on the portable DVD, the afternoon progressed well with only a few minor weepy disruptions. Though, I will say, the poor kid had chills and the whole works.
Mind you Lauren attempted, but failed miserably, at trying to out “sick” Sam, suddenly developing all of Sam’s symptoms and feeling it was important to note that she needed to go see the Dr. too (once I assured her that she would see the Dr too she miraculously improved). As a matter of fact, she has had numerous complaints lately that have prompted her to say “I sink I need to go see Dr. Mowah”. Now mind you our Dr. is a very nice guy but typically it is still a pretty quick cure if I ask the girls “do you think you need to go see Dr. Mohr?”, the answer is usually a pretty quick “no” and off they go on their merry way (it’s kind of my litmus test for how bad they’re hurt). I had even joked with Brandon that maybe next time we should have the Dr. give her shots so she would not be as impressed with going to see him.
So anyway, yesterday I took the girls in and yes Sam has strep (note to Julie: don’t worry, no signs of mono), Lauren just needs more TLC for now. As we were getting ready to go to the appointment, Lauren says (with a somewhat anxious look on her face)”I sink I will need a shot”. Mommy says, “no honey I don’t think you will need a shot”. As we are waiting in the office for the Dr, Lauren says ” I sink I will need a shot”…Mommy says “no honey, I don’t think you will need a shot”. After the doctor leaves, I say ” okay girls let’s go”, Lauren says “No! I didn’t get a shot”. Mommy says “honey, Dr Mohr says you don’t need a shot, you are okay.” She begrudgingly leaves the office. I believe it was as we were getting our coats on in the waiting room it dawns on me: she wants a shot ,”Laurensita, why did you want a shot?” …shoulder shrug… “did you want a sucker?” …”Uh huh”. (Our Dr’s office gives out sugar-free suckers after they give immunizations -she had a flu shot this Fall)
So it would seem my 3 year old daughter is a sucker-seeking-addict. Willing to go through a little pain to get her fix. I guess I’ll have to come up with a new test to see if she’s really hurting, apparently even getting a shot is not a deterrent. I now realize that “anxious” look was more a look of anticipation.

Dirt
February 15, 2008
So my SIL posted this meme:It’s the “123,5,3 meme”, you grab the closest book and turn to page 123. Then you skip the first 5 sentences on the page, and post the next 3.
The book closest to me was “Dirt” (I once had an ambition to have a beautiful perenial garden, that has since been replaced by other interests such as wearing clean clothes and eating off clean dishes) This book is now a decorative item on the bottom shelf of a lamp stand in our livingroom.
It says: Bamboo, which is a woody grass, can be clumping or running, from timber to pigmy size, as well as hardy or tropical. The bamboo shoot, or cane, which is synonomous with all things lithe and Oriental and a mainstay of garden decoration and support, is sucha unique idea that it, too, commands its own nomenclature. The hollowed-out, jointed, familiar stem ofthe bamboo is properly called a “culm.” There are imported noninvasive kinds, but for the most part these culms dig down into the earth and form long, strong rhizomes that rise up around the parent plant to produce more and more bamboo. This sounds enthralling, does it not?….(incidentally, I have never actually read this book, I tried once but I found it was very useful as a seditive.)
Okay, I just realized I wrote 5 sentences instead of three but it’s kind of interesting so I think I’ll leave it.
A Banner Day
February 13, 2008
Erica had a great birthday today complete with pancakes and bacon for breakfast (compliments of her daddy) and dat da da daa….. Lauren finally figured out how to blow her nose!!! Mind you she still walks around the house sniffing but at least if I stop her she can do it! I’m hoping this will help her avoid another round of antibiotics as she has already been on them twice in the last 5 weeks and she is starting to have a yellowish-greenish thing starting again. (I know, my life is a thrill a minute!)
The birthday party that almost wasn’t
February 10, 2008
Erica’s b-day is this coming Wednesday. Today we had planned her family birthday party (extended family). We weren’t sure if we should go ahead with it due to white out conditions and a seriously cold wind chill, but we had the house clean(ish) and the food ready so we decided to go ahead with whoever could make it -everybody came! Even Nana and Papa were able to be here “via satellite” (just have to love skype). We like to make a big deal over the girls on their b-day, so instead of doing a lot of gifts and stuff at Christmas, we do their big gift for their birthday. This year Erica is in kindergarden so that means she gets a “friends” party too. For the friends party she gets to invite the same number of friends as her new age will be, we learned our lesson with her older sister Sam (invited the whole class) -it was a bit much. Erica loves planning her birthday celebrations, she literally starts planning the next years party the day after her current year party. This year she gets almost a whole week of celebrating. Today was her family party, Tuesday we do supper at the restaurant of her choice (usually this is on thier actual b-day but hers lands on Wednesday this year and we have church programs so there isn’t enough time) this year is The Olive Garden (loves the zouppa tuscana), Wednesday is her actual b-day for which she has planned a “big breakfast” (this is usually reserved for weekends- we’ll see if it works out) and treats brought to school and Team Kids, Thursday is her annual well check at the doctors office (not so much a celebration but not due for any shots that I’m aware of), then Saturday is her friends party. Whew, what a week we’ve got scheduled! I also make them a cake of their chosing, I started making their cakes when they were babies and it has kind of stuck (there have been a couple of years that we bought one here or there because of being sick or having a new baby around) mind you I’m not a fantastic cake decorator but they seem to like it. (I’ll try to post pictures later) This year Erica wanted a double layer chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate ice cream, it had blue “roses” and pink “loops”. She had a great time today! This should be her best week ever
We are so thankful that she is doing so well this year. She is still on a lot of meds but she has not missed any school yet this fall/winter, and has only had a few managable flare ups (when she is coming down with a cold). We are so proud of her, I can hardly believe she is already reading well enough to have read some of her own card this year and she catches on so quickly to technological stuff it’s crazy. I don’t remember if I posted about the day she said she’d had a bad day in computers class because she had “tried to edit undo but accidently clicked on something else that erased everything, but teacher was able to get it back” and just last week she was helping my mom figure out how to work her DVD player. She loves school and is quite a little “social bug” coming home with phone numbers from friends because they have planned a play date. She still has her “prickly” days when she is not exactly the funnest person to be around but I think that she is learning to cope with them and having her medical stuff a little more in balance has been a big help. God has truely blessed us with a special little girl and we are thankful for each day.
Is that legal?

Not your typical sledding party I guess but the neighbors (across the street) didn’t seem to mind. The last time we went to Joshua spot we said next time we’d have to bring our gear and make a snowman. Then somehow we got to talking about how the hill would make a good sledding spot. The girls thought that sounded like a good idea and so today we took them sledding in the cemetery. It’s an old “inactive”cemetery so there’s a lot of open space without markers. We couldn’t get the snow to work for a snowman but the girls had fun on the hill and I took some winter pictures of Joshua’s marker for my scrapbook. Here are some pics of the activities:
We finished up with some hot chocolate that Tia Brenda had brought. The girls are hoping to make it an annual activity.
